Employer coverage of public transport costs

Employers must cover at least half the cost of the public transport season ticket (2nd class fare) that their employees use to travel between their home and their place of work. And the courts regularly remind us that this obligation applies regardless of the distance between these two places and therefore, even if the employee has chosen, for personal convenience, to live far from their place of work.

Therefore, since your employee has taken out a train season ticket to come to your company, it is your responsibility to reimburse them for 50% of the cost of this season ticket.

Reminder: Employers who fail to reimburse half of an employee’s home-to-work public transport costs may be fined up to €750 if they are individuals, or €3,750 if they are companies or associations.
